| Species: | Beautiful Jewel Beetle (Melobasis speciosa)| This Photo: | 🔍S1, Male, Apical Teeth🔎 | Synonym: | Melobasis gratiosissima | Thank you Stephan Gottwald (SteGoBups) for confirming the id of this species for us General Species Information: Found in the Murray Mallee SA and possibly elsewhere ~9mm Male, larger than usual but still tiny for jewel beetle. We asked Dr Peter Lang about the rear projections. He replied "The projections are the lobes/teeth of the apical abdominal segment on the ventral side which are not always visible from above. In males (which I think applies here) they are generally more widely spaced than in females."
